Basic guide to the Sacral Chakra

The Sacral Chakra governs emotions, sexuality and your autonomy over your environment. It's demon is dreaded guilt and it governs your right to feel and have pleasure. Balance here is essential for emotional and sexual wellbeing.

What is a chakra and why should I care?

Chakra is a sanskrit word which translates to wheel or disc and they are the energy centres in our bodies. When our chakras are in balance we feel happy and grounded in our lives and will experience life as it should be, without pain, hardships or illness. When we are out of balance things can be very uncomfortable for us.

Each chakra is developed in turn from the second trimester of pregnancy through to adolescence. Most people are aware of the seven main chakras which are shown as different coloured points moving up the spine, as in the image below.

Our chakra system contains two lines of energy (liberating and manifesting current) which help keep these 'discs' spinning cleanly, we can also gain insights into our lives from the messages our chakras give to us, as long as we know how to read the messages.

The Sacral Chakra

Our second chakra develops from the age of 6 months to two years this chakra development helps you to understand the human need for movement and connection to others. The Sacral Chakra is the water element chakra, so it's also directly linked to yin energy, being in flow and the moon. Without balance here you will find it difficult to cultivate, grow and future relationships both with yourself and others.

Represented by the colour orange and refreshed by the chanting sound of VAM.

If you want to get to know your sacral chakra, try to get into the mindset of a baby growing into a toddler. Still concerned with survival (like babies) but starting to realise they have their own autonomy (all be it limited). Think of all the things a toddler cares about fun, being seen and heard, exploration of the world and getting what they want, these are all governed by your second energy centre.Located about one palm width underneath your belly button you can use this chakra to tune into your intuition by placing your hands over this spot during meditation.

Do you notice or have the following?

  • You chase pleasure and avoid pain?

  • You're over sensitive emotionally?

  • Rigidity in the body?

  • Fear of change

  • Lack of boundaries?

  • You feel dead inside.

Good questions for this chakra are:

  • Am I feeling all my emotions?

  • Do I cover my emotions?

  • What do I feel guilty for?
