Basic guide to the Throat Chakra

The Throat Chakra is the fifth chakra in our energy system. The throat can be misunderstood as everyone assumes it will only be to do with speaking but there is a lot more to this chakra than meets the eye.

Governed by the element of sound, the purpose of the throat chakra is communication and creativity. One of the key lessons you can learn from your throat is listening. Often if we have tightness in our jaw, problems with our ears, neck and obviously throat - this can show an imbalance in this energy centre.

What is a chakra and why should I care?

Chakra is a sanskrit word which translates to wheel or disc and they are the energy centres in our bodies. Our chakra system contains two lines of energy (liberating and manifesting current) which help keep these 'discs' spinning cleanly, we can also gain insights into our lives from the messages our chakras give to us, as long as we know how to read the messages. When our chakras are in balance we feel happy and grounded in our lives and will experience life as it should be, without pain, hardships or illness.

When we are out of balance things can be very uncomfortable for us. Each chakra is developed in turn from the second trimester of pregnancy through to adolescence. Most people are aware of the seven main chakras which are shown as different coloured points moving up the spine, as in the image below.

The Throat Chakra Our fifth chakra to develop the Throat Chakra is represented by the colour blue and located in the centre of your throat. Chanting the sound HAM can really help to balance this chakra (I know I thought this was silly when I first saw it too, but genuinely it really works!).

This chakra is developed from the ages of 7 - 12 years so if you want to understand your throat chakra it's a good idea to tune into yourself at that age and look at others at this age and truly understand what is important to them. One way to tune into yourself at a younger age is through meditation and journaling. You can try soul stream writing to your 7-12 year old self. (If you're not sure how to do this contact me and I will give you the low down).

The throat chakra is also very much about creativity. I love the notion that the throat chakra is a way of giving birth to ideas. Alisha says it so well below that the vocal cords look just like a vagina. Every time you speak you are giving birth to your expression of reality. Use your words carefully!

Good questions to ask yourself when focussing on your throat:

  • Do I talk too much?

  • Am I a gossip?

  • Do I have a fear of speaking?

  • Do I have a small, weak voice?

  • Do I interrupt people when they speak?

Issues of the throat chakra are communication, creativity, listening and finding your own voice. Think about times as an adult where you have cut people off before they even finish what they're saying or have started thinking about a response before they have finished. Maybe you're thinking about work, your shopping list or the kids whilst you're in conversation with someone about something completely different. The throat teaches us we should be present in conversation and really listen. Actually take in and process what people are saying, without judgement.

You may have an imbalance in your throat chakra if you have experienced or told lots of lies, this is the demon of the throat chakra. Speak your truth! In addition if you have been constantly yelled at, had excessive criticism, authoritarian or alcohol/ chemical dependent parents as well having to hold lots of secrets all these things block the energy that you want to flow freely through your throat.

Fear not if you think you have an imbalance in this area you can use the following affirmations, mantras and crystals to help support your healing.

Affirmations for the Throat Chakra:

I hear and speak my truth I listen intently

I deserve to be heard

I am creative

I allow the creativity of the universe to flow freely through me

I express myself clearly

I am a a good communicator

I only hear and use words of loving intention Mantra for your Throat chakra:

Breathe in: I live creatively

Breathe out: Secrets and lies

Crystals to support your Throat Chakra:

Blue Kyanite - This crystal helps you to open up communication cutting through your fears of speaking your truth. Also as a side fact, this crystal never needs cleaning as it doesn't hold negative energies (how cool is that?!).

Lapis Lazuli - Often known as the stone of truth, Lapis Lazuli will help bring balance to your throat chakra.

Aquamarine - This stone is excellent if you have a fear of speaking and can be used if you have to make presentations to bring you more courage. It can also help you over come over judgmental thoughts and feelings.
