Basic guide to the Third Eye Chakra

The Third Eye Chakra is the sixth chakra in our seven chakra system. The more we move up the system the more we liberate ourselves from our bodies and move into the realms of thoughts, dreams and other layers of consciousness.

The Third Eye Chakra is the air element chakra and it's purpose is pattern recognition.

What is a chakra and why should I care?

Chakra is a sanskrit word which translates to wheel or disc and they are the energy centres in our bodies. Our chakra system contains two lines of energy (liberating and manifesting current) which help keep these 'discs' spinning cleanly, we can also gain insights into our lives from the messages our chakras give to us, as long as we know how to read the messages. When our chakras are in balance we feel happy and grounded in our lives and will experience life as it should be, without pain, hardships or illness.

When we are out of balance things can be very uncomfortable for us. Each chakra is developed in turn from the second trimester of pregnancy through to adolescence. Most people are aware of the seven main chakras which are shown as different coloured points moving up the spine, as in the image below.

The Third Eye Chakra Our sixth chakra to develop, the Third Eye Chakra is developed throughout adolescence so if you want to understand your third eye chakra you need to tune into your adolescent self (eeek! Scary prospect!)

Psychologist, Dr. Bruce Naramore states in his book, Parenting Teens, that there are a number of things adolescents need in order to become balanced and well adjusted adults. So maybe explore these themes and see what come up for you if you think you have an imbalance in your third eye:

- Have you developed a sense of identity and a sense of uniqueness?

- Have you developed relationships outside of the family home?

- Have you developed the capacity to relate to the opposite sex?

- Are you confident in your skills to cope with adult life?

Represented by the colour Indigo, located in the middle of your forehead, between your eyebrows and brought back to balance by the chanting of AUM. Good questions to ask yourself when focussing on your Third Eye chakra:

  • Does what I see in the world match what I have been told about the world?

  • Do I suffer with a lot of headaches?

  • Do I become obsessed with things easily?

  • Do I find it difficult to see my future?

Issues of the Third Eye chakra include image, intuition, imagination, visualisation, insight, dreams and vision. The right of this chakra is to see.

  • How clearly do you see?

  • How many filters do you have on your view of the world?

  • Are you tuned into your intuition? Do you trust it?

As we move up through the chakras we also have to build much more trust in ourselves, become more self reliant and begin to understand the connection we have to all things, not just ourselves, and our immediate environment.

If you fear an imbalance in your third eye, try supporting yourself with the following affirmations.

Affirmations for the Third Eye Chakra:

I see clearly

I am connected to my intution

I trust my intution

I visualise with ease

I can see my future and it looks awesome

I see all things in clarity

I manifest my vision with ease

Mantra for your Third Eye chakra:

Breathe in: The right to see

Breathe out: Illusion

Crystals to support your Third Eye Chakra:

Amerthyst - A protective stone that helps with balance and stimulation of the third eye. This stone can help open your third eye and provide inner and outer wisdom.

Moldavite - This is a great stone for cleansing. It can help to restore and balance this whole chakra system, it clears negativity and can support dream recall. This is a very powerful stone in my experience, use with caution.

Purple Fluorite - This stone dispels negativity while promoting intuition and mental clarity and focus. I have a piece next to my bed to also support dream work.
